They open/close with some pressure assistance needed from the working fluid. They do no stop flow in the backwards direction (against the arrow) and do not allow for full flow in the backward direction. A check valve should be utilized with this valve if backflow is cannot be permitted.

Works great for my application, I use it ~160-165 PSI. I trigger it with a 12v lithium Ion batter pack without a problem and it resets perfectly. I'm very glad I went with this over the other valves I was looking at to get the extra pressure I was looking for.
